Green Initiatives by Jersey Shore Steel
The products manufactured by Jersey Shore Steel are 100% recycled and produced from Tee-section rails destined for scrap. Rail Steel, with its high strength-to-weight ratio provides economy in design and lower costs for production including energy usage, material handling and lower freight costs. To further reduce our carbon footprint, the by-products of our hot-rolled process including mill-scale, punchings, crops, drops and small end-pieces are recycled back into the waste-stream for raw material used by foundries, electric arc furnace mini-mills, and cement manufacturing.
Another initiative inherent with JSS rail steel is the utilization of landfill gas (LFG) in the reheat furnace in our re-rolling mill. The partnership with The Wayne Township Landfill allows JSS to reduce our dependency on natural gas and reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by using waste methane as fuel instead of letting it flare into the atmosphere.
Other efforts include recycling used oil for resell, processing old pallets into mulch, shredding paper for local farmers to use as animal bedding, placing recycle containers throughout the mill and recycling used printer ink cartridges.
We believe that the environmental and energy stewardship practices implemented at Jersey Shore Steel are having a positive impact on our environment.
